Understanding the Treatment

What Are Dental Veneers?

Quick answer: Dental veneers are ultra-thin shells (0.3–0.7mm) of porcelain or composite resin that are bonded permanently to the front surface of teeth. They correct discolouration, chips, fractures, gaps, minor crowding, and irregular shapes — simultaneously. The result is a dramatically improved smile that looks entirely natural.

Unlike teeth whitening, which can only lighten natural tooth colour, veneers allow the dentist to control the exact shade, shape, length and texture of the finished tooth. This makes them the most versatile cosmetic dental treatment available — and the reason they are the first choice for a complete smile makeover.

Porcelain veneers require two appointments. At the first, a small amount of enamel (typically 0.3–0.5mm) is removed from the front of the tooth to create space for the veneer. Impressions are taken and sent to a dental laboratory where the veneers are fabricated to a bespoke specification. Temporary veneers are worn in the interim. At the second appointment, the final veneers are bonded permanently.

Composite veneers can often be completed in a single appointment. The composite resin is applied directly to the tooth surface and sculpted by the dentist in the chair. While less durable than porcelain, composite veneers are a cost-effective option that can be repaired easily if chipped.

At Palace Dental Centre, every smile makeover begins with a detailed smile design consultation to understand your goals, assess your teeth and gum line, and create a preview of your expected result before any preparation begins.

What We Can Correct

Smile Problems Veneers Fix

Veneers address a range of cosmetic concerns — often several at once in a single treatment plan.

🟡

Discolouration & Staining

Tetracycline staining, deep discolouration, or intrinsic colour changes that whitening cannot correct. Veneers provide permanent colour masking.

Chipped or Fractured Teeth

Chips and fractures on front teeth — whether from accidents, biting hard objects, or grinding. Veneers restore the original tooth shape fully.

↔️

Gaps Between Front Teeth

Diastema (gaps between teeth) corrected with veneers without orthodontic treatment — ideal when the gap is cosmetic rather than bite-related.

📐

Uneven or Short Teeth

Teeth of different lengths or irregular shapes given a uniform, proportionate appearance that enhances the overall smile line.

🔄

Minor Crowding

Mildly crooked front teeth can appear straightened with veneers — achieving an aligned look without braces for cosmetically motivated patients.

🔬

Fluorosis & Enamel Defects

White spots, bands or pitting from fluorosis or enamel hypoplasia that cannot be treated by whitening — permanently masked with veneers.

How It Works

The Porcelain Veneer Process

1

Smile Design Consultation

We discuss your goals, examine your teeth and gum line, assess suitability, and plan the ideal shade, shape and number of veneers. A detailed quote is provided.

2

Tooth Preparation

A minimal layer of enamel (0.3–0.5mm) is removed from each tooth to create space for the veneer. Local anaesthetic used as needed. Temporaries are fitted.

3

Impressions & Lab Fabrication

Precision impressions are sent to the dental laboratory. Your custom porcelain veneers are fabricated over approximately 1–2 weeks to the exact specification agreed.

4

Veneer Fitting & Bonding

Temporaries are removed, veneers are tried in and checked for shade, fit and bite. Final adjustments are made, then veneers are bonded permanently with dental adhesive.

5

Final Polish & Aftercare

Veneers are polished to a natural finish. We advise on aftercare: avoid biting hard objects, consider a night guard if you grind, and attend 6-monthly check-ups.

FAQs

Veneers Questions Answered

Dental veneers at Palace Dental Centre start from KSh 15,000 per tooth for porcelain veneers and KSh 8,000 per tooth for composite veneers. A smile makeover covering 6 upper front teeth would start from KSh 90,000 in porcelain or KSh 48,000 in composite. A detailed quote is provided at your smile design consultation.
Porcelain veneers are fabricated in a dental laboratory, are more durable (10–15 years+), more stain-resistant, and have a superior aesthetic quality that mimics natural enamel. They require two appointments. Composite veneers are applied directly by the dentist in a single appointment and can be repaired easily if chipped, but are less durable (5–7 years) and more prone to staining over time.
The enamel preparation for porcelain veneers is irreversible — so the tooth will always require some form of restoration going forward. The veneers themselves are not permanent: porcelain veneers last 10–15 years, composite 5–7 years. When they need replacing, the process is straightforward. Composite veneers typically require no or minimal enamel removal.
Porcelain veneers are highly aesthetic — the material has a translucency that mimics natural enamel in a way that is very difficult to distinguish. We shade-match veneers to your skin tone and facial features. Our patients consistently find that others notice a great smile without identifying veneers as the reason.
This depends on how many teeth show when you smile naturally. The 6 upper front teeth are the most commonly treated. Some patients extend to 8 teeth for a wider smile line. Veneers can also be placed on a single tooth after injury to match the adjacent teeth. We assess your smile and recommend the minimum number required for a natural-looking result.
Yes — veneers can be placed on root canal-treated teeth that have darkened, to restore their natural appearance. The tooth must have adequate remaining structure for bonding. In some cases a crown may be recommended instead if the tooth has been significantly weakened. We assess each case individually.
